WELCOME TO CKD EDMONTON

Pil Suhng! and Welcome.  My name is Lindsay Martin and as Chief Instructor of CKD Edmonton I am delighted you have decided to experience Choi Kwang Do, the Martial Arts of the 21st Century.  Developed and foundered by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, 9th Degree Black Belt.

My aim as Chief Instructor is to make your martial arts experience as informative and enjoyable as possible.  I look forward to a long and happy training relationship with you and your family.

Your first class is one that you will always remember, it’s the class when you took your first steps to becoming a Black Belt and start meeting other students, who just like you, want to be the very best they can.

WHAT IS CHOI KWANG DO?

Choi Kwang Do is a unique martial art based on scientific principes and developed to promote optimum health, fitness and self defence.

Choi Kwang Do was developed by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi between 1978 and 1987 and has proved to be the most effective martial arts system in the world.  Choi Kwang Do's natural, easy-to-learn, sequential movments maximize your body's force-producing capabilities, but more importantly, they increase opportunities to enhance your health.  It's a unique program based on modern scientific principles from human anatomy, physiology (the branch of the biological sciences dealing with the functioning of organisms), psychology (the science of mental life),kinesiology (the branch of physiology that studies mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement), neurophysiology (the branch of neuroscience that studies the physiology of the nervous system) and biomechanics(human movment science).

Although dojang means "house of discipline", Choi Kwang Do is not a military martial art.  Our dojang is a house of mental discipline where we scientifically train our bodies and minds in a ideal environment.

Choi Kwang Do is not designed for competition and does not have the intensity of sports training.  The system is meant for the average individual who wants to learn real-life,practical self-defense skills and achieve a greater level of health and well-being, not people solely interested in winning trophies.  Because it's a non-contact, non-fighting, non-competitive art that stresses mental, physical, emotional and social development, Choi Kwang Do promotes non violent resolutions to conflict, practical solutions to cardiovascular improvement and enjoyable methods of exercise.  In addition, with competition removed, students can continually develop their skills - not against each other, but with each other.  With a progressive system from White Belt to highest level of Black Belt, Choi Kwang Do always offers you something new and challenging to learn, experience and enjoy.

Our training is based on individual needs, capabilities, skill levels and age.  In our Worldwide schools, students range in years from 3 to 89, and some of our overseas Instructors are over 70.  Since our primary goals are to prevent or reduce illness and disease and to promote optimum health and longevity by minimising degeneration of body and mind, we also welcome those with limitations, such as individuals who use wheelchairs, who are amputess, who are blind and who have maladies such as heart disease, diabetes, athritis, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis.  Everyone is welcome at Choi Kwang Do!

PRINCIPLES OF CHOI KWANG DO

Choi Kwang Do is founded in non violent self defence, health, character development and humanity.  We want to help each other and anyone else who needs our assistance.  Students recite our doctrines and a pledge at the beginning of every class and living by the Choi Kwang Do principles at all times is considered to be of utmost importance.

Our school motto "Pil Suhng", translates as "Certain Victory", but not in an aggressive manner and not always in respect to outside forces.  It means we never give in unless it's the right thing to do, we never give up until we achieve victory and we never allow our spirit to break.  The Pil Suhng attitude allows us to overcome any obstacle to achieve our goals.

Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International is an international supportive family system whose primary principle is to affirm each other in our common goal: to live a more productive, healthier, longer life.  We want to create compassionate Choi Kwang Do families of individuals around the world and bring those families close to other Choi Kwang Do families.  Because of this goal, once an individual becomes a student at one CKD school, they can train at any other CKD school in the world!

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AS A NEW MARTIAL ARTS STUDENT?

Like anything in life, Martial Arts is no different, the more you put into it, the more you will receive from it.  It is very important to try your hardest to attend two classes per week.  Any less or training irregularly will soon lead you to forget or make little progress in what you have been taught.  If you miss a class, make sure you try to make it up.  (Remember once enrolled, you can train in any affiliated Choi Kwang Do school).  By practicing at home just 5 - 10 minutes a day, you will see a major difference in the amount of material and techniques that you can remember for your next lesson.

Within weeks you will notice a positive difference in your wellbeing as you gain confidence by performing and remembering our easy to learn techniques.  By practicing our yoga based stretching routine you will begin to feel the physical benefits and notice a difference with your flexibility and co-ordination.

Upon enrollment, as well as your new uniform and belt, you will receive a very informative Student Guide.  The information contained in the student guide will cover most frequently asked questions, as well as providing you with a handy reference source for an overview of history, philosophy and concepts of Choi Kwang Do.

In Choi Kwang Do, each individual is accepted for what they are, regardless of race, sex, creed, national origin, talents or disabilities, the basic premise that we all share a common goal; self improvement.  With this idea in mind you should come to feel as if the Dojang is almost like your ‘second home’. With a feeling of warmth and fellowship towards all of your dojang mates and instructors.

If you require any additional information or have any questions, please ask myself or one of the other Instructors, we will be more than pleased to answer them for you.

In closing I again welcome you and give you my best wishes and for a long and rewarding membership.
